Con voz acongojada el artista expresó que el doctor Iglesias, director del Hospital Central de las Fuerzas Armadas, le informó que su hermano no pudo resistir una infección urinaria, la cual se le fue a la sangre, por lo que no pudo resistir, debido a que estaba muy débil.
El 29 de octubre de 1987, mientras practicaba gimnasia en el Centro Olímpico Félix Sánchez, Luis sufrió un accidente que lo alejó de la música y lo mantenía desde entonces postrado en una silla de ruedas, sin poder valerse por sí mismo.
